Gap up! This wooden dentist’s chair used to belong to the Skien school board, and it has been used by many schoolchildren. The chair can be adjusted to give the patient a better sitting position. The pedal drill has a heavy iron undercarriage with a foot-shaped pedal. It is attached to a wheel that drives the mechanics of the drill.
In 1917 it was decided that the municipalities must provide sufficient dental care to their pupils. After 30 years, however, the Storting (parliament) found that public dental care was not practiced the same way everywhere in Norway, and there was a big difference between rural and urban areas. In rural areas, it was almost unusual for schoolchildren to have their teeth examined. This became the starting point for the investigation into public dental care in the late 1940s, which led to the public dental care act of 1949.
