City model

(TGM.2024:057)
City models give us a visual experience of what our city used to look like and show how the city structure has changed. The exhibition showcases three city models of Skien.
This model shows what the area around Klosterøya looked like in 1796. This was before the paper factory came along, and we can see the structure around the river with the sawmills of the timber industry. The area around the sawmills and past the bridges is called Eidet.
Christianskirken (King Christian’s Church), which you can see on this model, had recently been built. This happened after the great city fire in 1777, which destroyed large parts of Skien. The previous church, Mariakirken (St. Mary’s Church), stood on approximately the same site.
