Phaëton carriage

(TGM-BM.1960:037)
This carriage is from Borgestad farm. It is made for one horse, it can accommodate four passengers, and it is equipped with a driver’s seat at the back.

The Phaëton carriage is lightweight and has large wheels that roll easily and quickly. It was described as fast and dangerous, and the origin of its name can be found in Greek mythology. Phaëthon is the son of the sun god Helios, and one day he was allowed to drive Helios’ sun chariot across the sky, but he lost control of the horses when they galloped out of their usual orbit, setting fire to heaven and earth. That says something about how fast you could go in a Phaëton carriage.
