Fantastical Kittelsen

Welcome into the forest. The trolls are waiting.

An experience for the whole family

Troll painted by Theodor Kittelsen

What is hiding in the forest?

What is really lurking in the dark forest? Perhaps a troll peeking out from behind a rock, or a mysterious gaze between the spruce trees. Trolls and fairy tales have always been closely connected to Norwegian nature, and Theodor Kittelsen was the artist who gave the trolls a face.

The Fantastical Kittelsen is an experience for the whole family, where visitors step directly into Kittelsen’s magical universe. Through film, large-scale projections, and atmospheric scenography, the room is filled with forest, darkness, light, and mystical figures. Here, you can explore the forest, encounter the trolls, and feel the very special fairytale atmosphere that characterizes Kittelsen’s art.

Theodor Kittelsen

Theodor Kittelsen was born in Kragerø in 1857 and is known for his powerful and imaginative depictions of Norwegian nature, folklore, and fairytales. Using simple colors, strong contrasts, and great imagination, he created trolls and mythical creatures that feel both strange and familiar at the same time. Some are large and heavy as mountains; others move quietly between the trees.

You can experience The Fantastical Kittelsen at VEV, the museum in Brekkeparken. With the same ticket, you also gain access to several other experiences: All This Is Yours, Karsten and Petra’s Playroom, and the day’s guided tours.
