Homemade wooden wheelchair. It has four small wheels, a seat with a reclining backrest, and a footrest. The chair was used by Aslak Smedal at Haugstoga in Flatdal in 1910. With this chair, he could wheel himself around the house, perhaps even outside, if the surface was flat enough.
The Smedal family is a well-known family of fiddle players from Telemark, where three of the brothers were regarded as masters of the Hardanger fiddle. Two of them also became surgeons in America, which came in handy when their father Aslak fell ill and had to have his leg amputated due to gangrene. It was his son Greggar who performed the surgery on a visit home to Norway. Their good neighbour, Eivind Haugstoga, who was also a skilled blacksmith and craftsman, built this wheelchair for Aslak. Unfortunately, Aslak did not live very long after the operation; he died in 1911.
